What You’ll Receive From Aquagrip

AquaScan™ uses a photo-based digital mapping process with physical reference targets provided by Aquagrip. These targets allow us to accurately scale and map your deck surfaces so custom EVA foam pieces are manufactured to fit correctly.

Before starting the AquaScan™ process, Aquagrip will send you:

  • AquaScan™ reference targets
  • Clear instructions for target placement and photo capture
  • Guidance on how to submit your images

No special tools or software are required beyond a phone or camera.

For your convenience, you can download a printable AquaScan™ instruction checklist below, or simply follow the step-by-step guide on this page, which includes written instructions, photos, and video walkthroughs to guide you through each stage of the process.

Step 1 — Prepare the Deck Surface

Before placing targets or taking photos:

  • Remove all loose gear, coolers, mats, and accessories
  • Ensure all hatches are closed and seated properly
  • Clean the deck to remove dirt, sand, fish residue, and oils
  • Allow surfaces to dry completely

Goal: a clean, unobstructed surface so deck edges, hatch seams, and contours are clearly visible.

Step 2 — Place the AquaScan™ Targets

Aquagrip-provided targets are used to establish scale and reference points for the scan. Proper placement is critical.

Where to Place Targets

Place targets across the entire area being mapped:

  • Along perimeter edges
  • Near hatch seams and corners
  • Around curved sections and radiused edges
  • In open center areas to maintain consistent scale

Target Placement Guidelines

  • Targets should be evenly distributed
  • Every photo should include multiple visible targets
  • Targets must be placed flat on the same surface plane being scanned

Do

  • Keep targets flat and secure
  • Place enough targets so no large area is left uncovered
  • Ensure targets are clearly visible and unobstructed

Don’t

  • Don’t place targets on vertical surfaces
  • Don’t place targets on removable items
  • Don’t cover targets with shadows or glare

Step 3 — Take the Photos

The photos you take are used to create the digital deck layout, so consistency matters.

How to Shoot

  • Take photos from directly above the deck when possible
  • Keep the camera level to avoid distortion
  • Maintain a consistent shooting height
  • Choose one orientation and stick to it: All photos vertical (portrait) or All photos horizontal (landscape)
  • Do not mix orientations within the same set

Zoom & Camera Settings

  • Use one zoom level for the entire deck
  • Do not zoom in or out between photos
  • Avoid switching lenses or camera modes

Photo Overlap

  • Overlap each photo by 30–50%
  • Overlap ensures accurate stitching and alignment

Lighting Tips

  • Shoot in even lighting
  • Avoid heavy shadows across targets
  • Reduce glare by adjusting angle or time of day
  • Step 4 —

    Capture Detail Areas

In addition to general coverage photos, capture close overhead shots of:

    • Hatch corners and edges
    • Curves and radiuses
    • Tight clearances around hardware, drains, hinges, and latches

These images help ensure clean seams and proper clearances.

  • Step 5 —

    Photo Quality Check

Before submitting your images, confirm the following:

    • All reference targets are visible and not blurred
    • Deck edges, seams, and contours are clearly defined
    • No deck areas were missed
    • All photos were taken using the same zoom level
    • All photos are the same orientation (all vertical or all horizontal)
    • Photos are not overly zoomed, stretched, or distorted

For best results, submit photos in original quality whenever possible.
Avoid screenshots, compressed files, filters, or edits.

  • Step 6 —

    Submitting Your AquaScan™ Photos

Send your completed photo set along with:

    • Boat make and model (if applicable)
    • Areas included in the scan
    • Any notes on coverage, seams, or custom requests
