Most foam installs that fail aren't a product problem — they're a prep problem. Rushing the surface cleaning or peeling adhesive from the wrong spot will cost you time and money. Here's the full walkthrough so you get a clean, lasting install on the first try.

It Starts With a Clean Surface

This is the step most people underestimate. Your boat deck, console, or cooler top might look clean, but wax residue, salt film, and oils are invisible and they will prevent the adhesive from bonding properly.

Here's how to get it right:

Wash first. Use boat soap and water to remove dirt, salt, and grime. Let it dry completely.

Acetone wipe. Grab a clean, white, lint-free rag and wipe down every area that's getting foam. This strips wax, grease, and oils that soap can't touch. Don't use colored towels — the solvent can transfer dye onto your surface. Let the acetone evaporate fully before moving on.

Final alcohol wipe. Right before you peel the adhesive backing, do one last pass with isopropyl alcohol (at least 75% concentration — we use 99%) on the exact spot where the foam is going. This removes any dust or residue that settled after the acetone step. Think of this area as a clean zone — don't touch it, don't step on it.

If you're doing a full deck install, wash the whole boat first, acetone all the foam areas, then alcohol-wipe each section right before you place each piece.

Tools You'll Need

Nothing exotic here. You probably have most of this already:

Laminate roller — the J-roller type from any home improvement store. This is what gives you the firm, even pressure the adhesive needs to activate.

Slice tool with a micro-ceramic blade — for cutting the adhesive backing. Available online or at hardware stores.

Contractor's tape — standard painter's tape works fine.

Boat soap and water — for the initial wash.

Acetone, isopropyl alcohol, and clean white lint-free rags — for the prep steps above.

The Center-Strip Method (This Is the Key)

Here's where most DIY installs go wrong. People peel the backing from one edge and try to lay the foam down across the surface. Even a small misalignment at the start turns into a noticeable gap or overlap by the time you reach the other side.

We recommend the center-strip method instead. It gives you a reference point in the middle of the pad, so both sides lay down evenly.

Step 1: Flip the foam panel so the paper backing faces up.

Step 2: Using your slice tool, make a straight cut from top to bottom down the center of the backing paper only — don't cut through the foam.

Step 3: Make a second cut about an inch away from the first, creating a narrow strip of backing paper you can peel away.

Step 4: Carefully remove that center strip of backing to expose a thin line of adhesive down the middle.

Step 5: Flip the panel back over and position it on the surface using the exposed center adhesive as your anchor. Press it down firmly. Use tape to hold the edges if needed while you work.

Step 6: Lift one side of the panel, peel the backing toward the edge, and slowly press the foam down. Work from the center outward to push air out as you go.

Step 7: Repeat on the other side.

Rolling and Finishing

Once the foam is down, grab your laminate roller and go over the entire surface with firm, even pressure. The 3M marine-grade adhesive on all AquaGrip products is pressure-sensitive — it activates at roughly 15 pounds of pressure. Don't skip this step.

Pay extra attention to edges and corners. On larger panels, you can carefully use body weight for additional pressure.

Air Bubbles Are Normal

If a small air bubble shows up during install or later when the sun heats the surface, don't panic. Use a pin or tack to release the trapped air, then press firmly around the pinhole to reseal the adhesive. This is completely normal and doesn't mean anything is wrong with the product.

After You Install

Give the adhesive at least 24 hours to cure before heavy foot traffic or use. The bond strengthens over time, so the longer you can leave it undisturbed, the better.

When to Use AquaScan

If you're installing foam on a complex helm station, a curved console, or anywhere with tight tolerances, our AquaScan digital templating system takes the guesswork out of fitment. We send you the target system, you scan your exact surface, and we CNC-cut your pads for a precision fit. No measuring tape, no paper templates, no trimming on-site.

Install Instructions EVA Foam Boat Flooring

Aquagrip PE/EVA foam boat flooring is designed to enhance comfort, traction, and aesthetics in marine environments. When installed correctly, it provides a durable, low-maintenance solution for boat decks, cooler tops, and other high-use areas.

This guide covers tools, cleaning, preparation, installation technique, and long-term performance considerations to ensure your decking performs as intended for years to come.

Before You Start

Installing marine foam can feel intimidating, but proper preparation and technique make all the difference. Most premature failures occur due to insufficient cleaning or rushed installation, not product issues.

Take your time, follow each step carefully, and review the full guide before exposing any adhesive. Installation videos are included at the end of this page to visually demonstrate each step.

Tools & Cleaners Needed for a Successful Installation

Using the correct tools and cleaners is critical to long-term adhesion. Photos of each tool used are provided below.

  • Laminate Roller

Easily purchased at home improvement stores such as Home Depot or Lowe’s.

  • Isopropyl Alcohol (75%+ / 99% Recommended)

Widely available at pharmacies, grocery stores, hardware stores, and online.

  • Acetone

Commonly found at hardware stores, home improvement centers, and online retailers.

  • Slice Tool with Micro-Ceramic Blade

Available online or at many hardware and craft stores.

  • Contractor’s Tape

Standard contractor or painter’s tape, available at any hardware store.

Surface Cleaning & Preparation

Initial Wash

Before installing foam on your boat deck, cooler top, or any other surface:

  • Wash the area thoroughly with boat soap and water
  • Remove heavy dirt, salt, and grime buildup
  • Allow the surface to dry completely

Acetone Cleaning

Once the surface is dry:

  • Apply acetone to a clean, white, lint-free rag
  • Wipe down all areas that will receive foam
  • This step removes waxes, oils, and grease that prevent proper adhesion

Avoid spilling acetone on foam pieces or other finished surfaces. Do not use dyed towels, as solvents can leach color onto the surface. Allow acetone to fully evaporate before proceeding.

Final Alcohol Wipe

After acetone cleaning:

  • Use a fresh lint-free white rag
  • Apply isopropyl alcohol
  • Wipe the surface to remove any residue left behind

This final step ensures the surface is completely clean and ready for adhesive bonding.

Full Boat Installation Tip

If installing foam across a full deck or large area:

  • Wash the entire boat and allow it to dry
  • Perform acetone cleaning on all areas receiving foam
  • Use alcohol only on the exact area where each piece will be installed
  • Treat this area as a clean zone and avoid stepping or touching it prior to installation

Installing the EVA Foam Decking

All Aquagrip foam comes with 3M marine-grade pressure-sensitive adhesive. This adhesive activates once approximately 15 pounds or more of pressure is applied.

Why We Do Not Start From One Edge

Peeling adhesive from one side can cause alignment issues. Even a small error at the start can result in a noticeable misalignment at the end of the panel.

For this reason, we recommend the center-strip installation method described below.

  • Step #1

Flip the foam panel so the paper backing faces up

  • Step #2

Using a slice tool, make a straight cut from top to bottom in the center of the panel

  • Step #3

Make a second cut approximately 1 to 1.5 inches away from the first

  • Step #4

Peel away the backing between those cuts to expose a narrow adhesive strip

Cuts should be kept as straight as possible to ensure proper alignment.

Position the Panel

  • Carefully flip the panel over while keeping it lifted off the surface
  • Align the panel exactly where it should be placed

The exposed adhesive strip allows precise positioning without the panel fully sticking.

Set the Center Strip

  • Press down on the exposed adhesive area
  • Apply pressure using a roller
  • Once pressure is applied, the adhesive activates and locks the panel in place

Secure Each Side

  • Lift one side of the panel
  • Reach underneath and pull the paper backing toward you
  • As the backing is removed, rub your hand across the top of the foam to prevent trapping air
  • Work slowly toward the edge
  • Repeat the process on the opposite side

Final Rolling & Edge Press

  • Roll the entire pad using firm, even pressure
  • Pay close attention to edges and corners
  • Additional pressure can be applied carefully using body weight, especially on larger panels

Handling Air Bubbles

Air bubbles can occasionally appear during installation or later due to heat expansion.

If a bubble appears:

  • Use a pin or tack to release the trapped air
  • Firmly press around the pinhole to reseal the adhesive

This is normal and does not indicate product failure.

After Installation

  • Avoid heavy foot traffic for at least 24 hours
  • Allow adhesive to fully cure over time
  • Normal use can resume once bonding is complete
