Helm Pad Thickness: 6mm, 12mm, 16mm or 20mm?

Eight hours at the helm tells you everything about what's under your feet. Stand on bare fiberglass or molded non-skid all day and your knees, lower back and feet feel it by the ride home. A helm pad fixes that. The question we get most at the shop is how thick it should be.

Short answer: for most center consoles running full days, 16mm. Here's why, and when to go another way.

What thickness actually changes

Thickness does three things at the helm:

  • Cushion. More foam between you and the deck means less shock through your legs when you're running in a chop.
  • Height. Every millimeter raises your stance. On some boats that matters for footrests, hatch lids and how the pad meets the deck around it.
  • Feel. Density matters as much as thickness. Two pads the same height can feel completely different underfoot.

That last point is why 16mm and 20mm aren't just "thick" and "thicker."

16mm: the one we build most

Our 16mm is dual density, and it's the softest pad we make. It's the standard on our ready-to-ship helm pads and the default in the Design Studio for a reason: it gives you real fatigue relief on long days without making you feel like you're standing on a mattress when the boat's moving.

If you fish all day, run offshore or just want the helm to stop beating you up, start here.

20mm: taller and firmer

20mm is single density. It's taller than the 16, but it's firmer underfoot, not softer. Guys who want a more planted, solid feel at the wheel, or who need the extra height to line up with the deck or a footrest, go 20mm.

If you want maximum softness, 20mm isn't the upgrade. 16mm is.

12mm: lower profile

12mm is dual density, same build as the 16, just lower. You still get a real cushioned pad under your feet. It's the call when height is tight: a pad that has to clear a hatch lid, sit flush with other foam on the boat, or fit under a leaning post footrest.

6mm: traction and finish

6mm is about grip and looks more than cushion. It's a clean, low-profile layer for spots where you want the AquaGrip finish and traction without adding height. For standing all day at the helm, go thicker.

Quick guide

Thickness Feel Best for
6mm Thin, low profile Traction and finish where height is tight
12mm Dual density, lower profile Tight clearances, matching nearby foam
16mm Dual density, softest Long days standing, most center consoles
20mm Single density, firmer, tallest A solid, planted feel or extra height

Stock size or custom

If your helm floor fits a standard footprint, our ready-to-ship helm pads come in 16mm, Small (14" × 36") or Large (16" × 39"), with adhesive or removable rubber backing.

If your helm isn't a rectangle, and most aren't, go custom. We cut custom helm pads up to 65" × 28", and smaller pieces are built on our Small Custom Helm Pads page. Build it in the Design Studio: pick your thickness, color and pattern (Plain, Perimeter Line and Teak Lines are standard, with more in the studio), and upload your logo. You get a proof and free revisions before we cut anything. Need the shape dead on? Use AquaScan: lay our printed targets on your helm floor, shoot overlapping photos, and email them in. We build the layout from your photos so the pad drops in like it came from the factory.

Whatever thickness you pick, install it right

A thick pad won't help if the edges lift. Every pad ships with genuine 3M adhesive, and the prep is what makes it hold. Read why boat foam peels before install day.
